In The Great Gatsby, what might be the symbolism of the clock?

Gatsby wants to set the clock back--to when he left for World War I as an eager soldier and when Daisy was his. He thinks that the past can be repeated. When the clock slips off the mantle, it's an unconscious way of trying to manipulate time--and it doesn't work.
